So Joanna reads the Every April script.
Remember, the main characters in that story are Anna, Casey, Duncan, Katy and Kye.
She comes back to me with this,
"It’s weirder than you think. In Every April, your Anna is in love with Casey. My Mom’s name is Anna. My Dad’s name was Casey."
Huh?
She continued on.
"There’s a George in there too, I have a brother named George. My other two brothers are Mark and Arthur. Got any of those?"
One of my best friend’s name is Mark, which is mildly interesting, but the fact that "Arthur" was the main character in the script I wrote just before Every April, made my brain spin.
(By the way, I recognize that that moment is not going to be nearly as weird for you as it was for me, because those names aren't as specifically personal to you. I get it. Please know that I have not yet begun to weird, I'm still setting stuff up. :)
At this point, the splinter in my mind has become the size of a Popsicle stick. That all struck me as really odd. I'm starting to feel like there’s a definitive pattern, so I start thinking back to my past, the girlfriends who managed to last longer than a weekend. here they are in chronological order.
Suzanne, Candace, Angela, Angie, another Angela, Brandee, Carmen Feliciana, Dyan, and Celeste.
All An’s or Anna’s. The pattern of coincidence holds.
Except for Celeste... However, there is this,
It’s a book about how following coincidences will guide you to a better life and save the planet. Sold about 50 million copies. It's what started me thinking that there may be more to the coincidences than than just chance. One of the most important books of my life. So yeah, that's at least kind of coincidental...
I spoke to Celeste about this recently. she said that her name was specifically chosen becuase of numerical patterns.
I start thinking about my family.
My Mom is Linda ANNE Sanders. Dad is NormAN Parks.
Two for two.
My sister Robin Marla, does not have an AN in her name. One strike against. But we also have zero connection, and almost never speak, so she's not really a player in my life. In a weird way that actually supports the patter.
My Mom just told me they were thinking about naming her Angela.. But that doesn't count as it's heresay.
Moving on. I learned that my fraternal Aunts were Sue Anne and Catherine Anne.We never realy saw my Mom's side much, but the patterm matched about 60%.
Overall, the pattern was still holding up, so I started dredging deep into my past. Pretty much everybody who shaped my life, good or bad, fit the pattern. The one high school teacher/coach who managed to inspire me at all is named Grant.
Even the confidence killing bully who beat the life out of me for a year straight in elementary school and massively warped my self confidence is a Brandon.
I decided it might be a good idea to re-read “Every April”, as it had been years. After doing so, I realized that all the other characters from the screenplay had showed up in my real life. The little sister, "Katy" is the most fun character in the story. I didn't get a little sister, so I chose one. Here she is.
Just like the Katy in story, Katie Lee is a extremely gifted, potty mouthed ass kicker with a knack for getting right to the point. By the way, she also took this photo. Skills.
This is Katy Martini-Freeman. One of my favorite people ever.
For obvious reasons. She's basically always set to happy shenanigans. She's also a chosen little sister, because she has more fun than everyone else. Now meet Katya.
When I was dead broke, Katya loaned me 200 bucks, and still has yet to ask for it back. She said my heart was connected to her conscience. She also somehow managed to make Drill Sergeant in the Marine Core, as a woman.
A Russian woman.
In combat.
Think about that degree of difficulty. Now she counsels the veterans coming home from Iraq. She also does stuff like this.
That pic is not photo-shopped in any way. She just rocks like that. Regularly.
This, is another Katy Lee that has become family, Kate Jane Lee.
She managed to overcome overwhelming adversity and became a very successful business woman. She's my unreal estate agent. (I've got another Jedi quality Katy in my life, but I'm saving her for later.)
The pattern is still holding up. The Katy's that have shown up in my life, are all eerily reminiscent of the Katy in the script. Super strong, super sharp and super hot ass kickers.
The Little Brother in the script is named Kye. Here's the Kye that showed up in my life.
Kye is also extremely talented, he was in the original cast of Rent on Broadway, and is now Barry Manilow's choreographer and Back-up singer. He also was one of the top two people in an intentional group of friends that explored new ways of living better.
We would stay up late into the nights, debating and philosophizing. He played a very large role in my shift from Zombie to Human.
The name Kye means "Keeper of the Keys".
Kye Brackett definitely was a Key for me in a lot of ways. Keep that in mind, when we start talking about Key codes in few chapters. Also, one definition of a "Bracket" is an organizing pattern.
Read into that what you will, but this pattern was the biggest key for me.
In re-reading through the script, with ten years of perspective, I could see that Casey, the main character based on myself, was an overachiever with no follow through. He had all the raw material, but couldn't make anything of it. He constantly sabotaged everything that was good for him. He ran away from home in order to get out of his responsibilities.
I was now able to see that I had done pretty much the same thing. That's not really a synchronicity, I think it's more like my subconscious mind was trying to get me to actually take stock of my life.
Joanna and I became extremely close. We didn't date, we became Life Lab partners.
Ponder this one.
So now, after finding this weird pattern of "Ann's" in my life, not only had I somehow become partnered up with yet another "Anna", and not only did she have her own strange pattern of Ryan's, her real life parents were somehow the exact same characters from a script that I had written ten years before I met her?
Huh?
That's synchronicity. The odds of that happening are rather unlikely. That will make you stop and think, if and when, something like that happens to you.
It will, if you play the game and pay attention.
Joanna and I spent endless hours wandering and wondering exactly why our lives were so different than everybody else's.
You see, Joanna has also had a very unusual life. When she was 15, she woke up one morning with a premonition that her father was going to die that day. He picked her up after school, and had a heart attack while driving her home, and died. Try coming to terms with that one.
She’s had it very tough since then, but luckily she is one of the bravest people I’ve ever met. She's now another sister, another new family member.
The way JoAnna's real life family wove into my fictional story was really pestering my mind. The sheer unlikelihood of it nagged at me. I knew there was something to it, but what?
So eventually, I ran the whole story by my co-writer on Every April, Erin Bobo.
He laughed. Not in a condescending way, but something entirely inscrutable. Then he told me about his new wife.
Elizabeth Anne.
Who's mother's name is Anna.
Who's step mother's name is Casey.
Who's little sister is named Katy
So now I find out that not only am I partnered up with a woman who's family is the exact people from my script, my writing partner has done the exact same impossible thing?
I'd like to request that somebody please calculate the odds of that happening. Please factor in that neither of us was trying....
This is where you have to dig deep. Really think about the odds of that all happening through pure chance.
Oh, and it might be interesting to note that Erins' birthday is my exact half birthday, January 27. There's that number again... And that his middle name is FrANcis.
The pattern abides.
