And at this point I'm still totally sucking at life. Try getting a good job when you're this weird...
Joanna had moved out and on. Same old issues. I kept wondering how to cancel my subscription...
My friend Kela was over at my apartment, warm shoulder tackling yet another of my sob stories. I'm spewing bile all over her when she gently tells me to STFU. It went a little something like this.
KELA
...I get it. It’s a lot of suck. But do you get
that you’re creating it all?
That did not sit well with me.
RYAN
What?! No way. I didn’t ask for any of
this! I didn’t ask my friends to sleep with my
girlfriend, any of five times that’s happened this
life! I didn’t ask to get MRSA! I didn’t ask for
my bosses to take advantage of me! I didn’t ask
for the people who were supposed to be there for-
KELA
Shh... Hold up, slow your roll. You keep talking about
patterns. Out of all those girls you’ve been bitching to me
about, what’s the one thing they all have in common?
Just like that, it hit me. I had the exact same issues occur with every single one of those An's and Anna's, over and over again. That meant one thing.
I was the only constant in the pattern of dysfunction.
That meant I was creating it.
Ouch. That kind of excruciatingly honest introspection is not much fun. I finally (grudgingly) realized that I was the one creating the problems in my relationships. Unpleasant as it was, at least I had a use for my crazy "An" experience.
It is a Pattern Recognition Tool.
Most of us have unhealthy patterns hidden in our blindspots. Don't think you have any blindspots?

Weird huh? It's almost like that was purposely built in to help us real eyes that we're not perfect. That's why they're called blind spots, because you can't become aware of them without help. That's what good friends like Kela are for. Great friends won't let you wiggle off the hook when you need to take ownership and responsibility for all the garbage in your life.
KELA
Say it.
RYAN
...Me. I’m the only constant.
KELA
Yeah. Have you ever heard about the Law
of Attraction?
RYAN
Nope.
KELA
Basically, it shows you how your thoughts
literally create your reality.
RYAN
Whatever, hippie.
KELA
Out of all the bad things, that have ever
happened to you, what’s one thing they all
have in common?
(Arguing against patterns was not going to go well for me at this particular point in time.)
KELA
Yeah, you. You’re the architect of this craptastrophe.
You’re generating negativity, so negative things are
happening. It's just that simple. It's just a matter of polarity.
Your negative charge is calling in all this drama. If you
don’t like it, change it. By changing your thoughts.
Look into it. Besides, it's not like you have anything
to lose...
I thought about popping off to her, but then I thought about this. Kela is a black belt. Not to be trifled with.
Ok, If you’re worried I’m going to start pimping “The Secret”, relax, I have no affiliation. It’s also not a complete system. Yes there is a force called "Attraction" and it has a ton of power, but it’s not a law.
Hold the north end of a magnet near the south end. Sometimes opposites do attract.
But "The Secret" people did manage to get the concept of consciously creating your own reality into the mainstream, so they did an important job there To be completely honest, The Secret had a flaw that irked me.
Even though I've had my reality rattled pretty well, I'm still highly logical. All I kept thinking was, "If you're so good at manifesting anything you need, why does this DVD cost me 30 bucks?" Seems counter intuitive.
But that gut feeling was there, and the experience with the motorcycle crash had taught me to trust my gut. So after reading the Abraham-Hick’s book, and "The Manifesting Manual" I was quite surprised to find that the basic concepts were the exact same ideas driving Kung Flow, the system I had used to teach myself fire spinning.
Both books teach you that your thoughts make or break everything. You have to learn how to become aware of your thoughts, monitoring and constantly shifting them from negative to positive. Basically you run a virus scan on yourself as often as possible, and manually upgrade your thought process.
Once you’ve got your energy up and running clean, you visualize exactly what you want to accomplish, then constantly add positive energy to your dream by repeating your goal to yourself, out loud, as much as possible.
I found that if I kept telling myself a complex new skill was easy, even when it wasn’t, I could achieve it incredibly fast. I rapidly mastered several new weapons, and even multiple combination's of them. In that one area, I was performing on world class level.
So I had evidence that the concepts did actually work in the physical.
I started musing that maybe, if it worked in the physical, it just might work in other more esoteric areas. Like my so called life. At this point, after all that other weird stuff, I was open to anything.
Also, Kela was right, I literally had nothing to lose. I was already at rock bottom, and the system didn’t cost me anything beyond the book. It also made me finally focus on figuring out just what exactly would make me happy.
