Another pattern was also recurring in my life.
The one where every last little thing I touched went bad.
Playing this new "Rifion Angel" character was making me stronger, but life was still kicking the crap out of me.
I felt like some ineffable thing was deliberately holding me back, like there was some force that was very intent on not letting me succeed. It felt almost biblical, like I had been hired to be the new full time Job. Heck I even had a couple of the Plagues. (MRSA and Bedbugs)
It felt like my life was a movie, and the producers had hired the Marquis de Sade to write it, then locked him in a room with too much Tequila, and not enough Crack.
Time after time, I would try to overcome my fear of responsibility, try to make something of value out of myself, only to get my feet swept out from underneath me. I was doing all the right things, but nothing would ever gel into anything solid. Even when I thought I had figured out a way to get my head above water, it turned into something that ended up pushing me further down. For example,
One year, at Burningman, I met this kid who was a great fire spinner. His name is David.
(Yes, there is a David in the Every April script. Of course there is.So let's make it a constant )
I told him about the Kung Fu programming system I had been working on. He flew out to try it. He made it work brilliantly. We started training together and became fast friends. One day he told me that his very wealthy family had set aside a bunch of money for him to start a business with. He decided that he wanted to open a Circus Arts academy, have me head the school, and teach this system. Dream come true for me right?
He flew me out to Colorado. His Dad loved the idea, gave us the greenlight and some seed money. After we figured out where to put the hot tub, we realized that we got to make real money offers to the really exceptionally talented performers we needed to teach all the different classes. We were like kids in a candy store. Giddy kids.
We realized Dave's friend SuperDave was the obvious choice to teach stilt walking.
A Circus school has to offer Juggling...
Dave and I both immediately said Dave Clay. I can't find a video that adequately displays his skill. But it's juggling five flaming cubs with one balanced on your foot and another on your chin kind of good. Oh, yeah, he's also standing on a bucket.
The fact that it seemed quite likely that I would soon be working with 3 Dave's set off the now hair triggered perimeter alarms on my pattern recognition detector. (3 being the minimum number needed to form a pattern.) I started thinking about the Dave's in my life.
Anna managed to convince her boss to join Phoenix Projekt. (Our fire troupe) So we had the worlds only Fire Tuba player. He is easily the most humble person I have ever met. One of my heroes, David Silverman.
(How humble is he? Well, he also has a day job. He's the main director of the Simpson's. He's a big part of the reason they got on the air. He also directed the Simpson's Movie. Dave is in fact so humble, that up until just now, after going to IMDB to verify his title, I didn't even know that he Co-directed Monster's Inc. Wow.)
I was also trying to kickstart my writing career, I had taken on a Literary manager. His name?
David Patrick Wilson.
On that trip to Europe that started all this business, I went with two friends. One was named David.
Thus began the Wave of Dave's. You know the drill by now, it was non-stop, etc. This is also to be expected, given that there are quite a few Dave's out there. As always, this is just to designate the constant.
David, is now a constant.
So right about now, everything seems really great right? I'm about to be given a ton of money to start a business where I get to do the thing I love the most all day with people I really like?
Winning!
